These range from deep sea habitats to coral reefs and coastline waters, with vast differences in salinity, light, temperature, and vegetation.

Saltwater fishes can be carnivores, herbivores, or omnivores. Herbivores eat algae and flowering seagrasses while carnivores eat shrimp, plankton, or tiny crustaceans. Ray-finned fish evolved over 420 million years ago.
