Coral Natural History Card
Corals are marine animals that typically live in compact colonies of many identical, small, individual polyps. Each polyp is a sac-like animal with tentacles surrounding a central mouth opening. Although some catch small fish and plankton, most corals obtain their nutrients from photosynthetic dinoflagellates that live within their tissues and grow in clear, shallow water for sunlight. There are both soft and stony coral species. Stony species excrete an exoskeleton of calcium carbonate near the base, which eventually creates a large skeleton.
Corals are major contributors to the physical structure of the coral reefs that develop in tropical and subtropical waters. Corals evolved over 500 million years ago.
