Kazimir Malevich (1879-1035) was a Russian avant-garde artist and theorist who had a large influence on 20th-century abstract art. Though early on, he experimented with various art movements like Impressionism and Fauvism, he eventually developed his signature minimal style of pure geometric form. His 1915 painting Black Square is an extremely simple canvas, with white paint around the edges and a center filled with a thick black square. In this work, traditional painting techniques and representation are abandoned, seeking a purer form of painting that he termed Suprematism.
