One mosasaurus tooth displayed in an acrylic case. This is an authentic fossilized tooth from a mosasaurus—a giant, carnivorous, marine lizard that lived until about 66 million years ago. A perfect 70-million-year-old addition for your fossil collection!
Mosasaurus was a type of giant, carnivorous, marine lizard related to modern lizards that lived in Earth's oceans during the Late Cretaceous period. These creatures grew up to 50th (15m) long, as long as Tyrannosaurus, and had large, pointed teeth along the jawbones as well as the roof of the mouth. Mosasaurus was at the top of the marine food chain during the last 20 million years of the Cretaceous period while dinosaurs roamed the land. Fossil remains have been found around the globe, even in now-landlocked areas of North America where the Western Interior Seaway once existed. The lineage ultimately ended in the same mass extinction event that eradicated the dinosaurs and ended the Mesozoic Era.
Photos are representative of typical specimens. Some natural variation in size/shape should be expected.
