Inspired by "Nike of Samothrace" by Unknown
The "Nike of Samothrace" was created during the Hellenistic period (323 BCE-31 CE) on the Greek island Samothrace. At 18-feet tall it represents Nike, the goddess of victory, standing on the prow of a ship and stepping forward triumphantly. The compellingly-rendered draping of her clothing suggests a setting with a strong sea breeze, leading scholars to think that the sculpture was created to observe a winning naval battle and honor the goddess. It is considered the finest surviving sculpture from the Hellenistic period and has remained in prominent display at the Louvre Museum in Paris since its discovery.
