Hippeastrum is a genus of bulbs native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. The genus is in the family Amaryllidaceae, with about 90 species and
600 hybrids. Cultivars of these perennial plants are often sold as indoor flowering
bulbs called "amaryllis", although the actual name Amaryllis applies to South African
bulbs grown outdoors. In the early 1800's, botanists in England started breeding Hippeastrum species from South America to produce hybrid lines with large showy flowers.
